About me

I have always enjoyed making anything I write as accurate as I can. On a daily basis I spot errors in news articles, websites, books, and it feels good to be able to help improve other peoples’ writing to make it as good as it can be prior to publication or submission.

My sound grounding in spelling, grammar and punctuation was drilled into me by an excellent English teacher at my secondary school in Kent, UK. Teaching English as a foreign language to students following qualification through CELTA, the Cambridge Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults, further honed my accuracy with the English language. Having a degree in English Literature and Geography from Bath Spa University, and a Masters in Volcanology and Geological Hazards from Lancaster University, I am familiar with academic writing. I have undertaken the Proofreading: Introduction unassessed course, and passed the Proofreading: Headway assessed course through the CIEP, the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading, to qualify me in proofreading. I now enjoy living in Lancaster.

I specialise in the following areas:

Earth and environmental sciences

I have a Combined Studies Honours Degree in English and Geography from Bath College of Higher Education, now Bath Spa University. A lifelong interest in geology led me to a Masters in Volcanology and Geological Hazards from Lancaster University, for which I gained Distinction.

English literature

Having enjoyed the guided reading my grandfather gave me as a child, and absorbing the excellent guidance of my ‘old school’ English teacher at secondary school, it was quite natural for me to go on to do an English Literature degree. I revel in helping PhD students make their writing the best it can be prior to submission.

Having spent nearly four years in a London based High Court law firm including passing the Law for Law Librarians course, I am familiar with both ‘legalease’ and the absolute need for accuracy.

Many years’ employment in Business Links assisting clients with their research taught me much about the business world and its language.

Social sciences

How people behave and influence the world around them is an area I find fascinating. Having proofread many theses in this area, I find the variety endlessly interesting.

Having studied Geography for my degree, and enjoying a lifelong interest in the subject, it allows me to have an insight into theses and dissertations on the subject. I also enjoy history having watched endless documentaries on wide ranging topics.

My Grandpa instilled a love of painting into me from a young age, taking me to galleries to see the artworks. I now enjoy painting and drawing myself, have had my work displayed in several exhibitions, have sold work, and have won prizes for my paintings.
